Wandering black hole shreds star
Our top story is a dramatic one: astronomers have analyzed a tidal disruption event caused by a supermassive black hole that appears to be wandering far from the center of its host galaxy. First flagged by the Zwicky Transient Facility and followed up by NASA's Swift mission, the flare came from a black hole about a million times the Sun's mass and more than 30,000 light-years off-center. That matters because supermassive black holes are usually expected to live in galactic nuclei, so this off-nuclear event could be evidence of past galaxy mergers, gravitational-wave recoil, or some other dynamical displacement.

ALMA expands high-frequency SETI search
Another intriguing late-July report comes from SETI research. Scientists used archival observations from ALMA in Chile to carry out a high-frequency search for narrowband signals that might indicate extraterrestrial technology. They did not find any candidate alien transmissions, but the bigger point is that this search explored millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths that traditional SETI programs often ignore. In other words, astronomers may have been listening to only part of the possible cosmic radio dial, and this work shows how existing observatory archives can expand that search efficiently.
