Local and serial entrepreneur Steven Herring joins Adam Montiel in the SLO CAL Studios for Part 1 of a wide-ranging conversation about entrepreneurship, leadership, systems, and the danger of becoming indispensable inside the company you created.

Steven shares how his entrepreneurial instinct showed up early, from selling mistletoe and Pogs as a kid to starting Party Partners Rental with a small collection of tables, folding chairs, and a trailer parked in the Atascadero Vons lot. That side hustle eventually merged with All About Table Tops and became All About Events, now one of the Central Coast’s most recognizable event rental companies.

But this is not simply an entrepreneurial victory lap. Steven explains why the owner is often the biggest bottleneck in a growing company, why everything living inside the founder’s head eventually becomes a liability, and why documented systems, standard operating procedures, clear chains of command, and consistent accountability must be established before a business can truly scale.

Adam and Steven also talk about learning to accept someone else performing a job at 90 percent of the owner’s personal standard, the difference between delegation and abandonment, and why assigning a task without follow-up creates frustration instead of freedom. Steven shares how he uses task-management systems and leadership structures to oversee six companies while remaining focused on the larger operation rather than every daily decision.
