VW's largest SUVs just became trickier to reverse

For the last eight years, rearview cameras for new vehicles have been federally mandated in the United States. Many younger people may never experience driving without them, which makes backing up easier and safer. On the flip side, modern backup cameras are software-controlled, and when software fails, so does the camera. Recalls related to these cameras are increasingly common, and Volkswagen has now had to recall nearly 58,000 examples of its largest SUV models—the Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport—due to failing cameras. Here’s everything drivers of these vehicles need to know.

VW Atlas and Atlas Cross Camera Recall

In the recall report posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) site, the following models and model years are stated to be involved in this recall:

• 2024-2026 VW Atlas (38,646 units)
• 2024-2026 VW Atlas Cross Sport (19,205 units)

The total number of SUVs is 57,851. Owners of these vehicles may notice a blank image from the rearview camera system on the display screen. With reduced rear visibility, the risk of a crash or injury increases.

“Under certain circumstances, a vehicle may experience a low-voltage electrical event that can cause camera images, including the rearview camera image, to not appear on the display screen as intended,” states the report.

The automaker says that environmental conditions may be a contributing factor to the fault, but it’s unaware of a known systematic issue that causes the specific conditions causing the camera to fail.

Volkswagen is aware of 571 claims that could be related to this recall.

What Owners Should Do Now

The automaker will send out owner notification letters on September 18, 2026. Anyone experiencing the issue is advised to exercise caution when reversing their vehicle. VW’s remedy amounts to updating the camera software, which will be done at no charge to customers.

As of July 28, 2026, owners can use their vehicle identification numbers on the NHTSA site to confirm if their vehicle is involved in the recall. Alternatively, VW’s customer service can be contacted at 1-800-893-5298 for more information; owners can use the recall number 91TV.

Facelifted VW Atlas Not Affected
