A meditation for the Feast of Saint Martha of Bethany, from Dom Guéranger’s “The Liturgical Year”, Volume IV of the Time after Pentecost.Saint Martha of Bethany, sister of Saints Mary and Lazarus, is one of the most beloved women in the Gospel and is honored as the faithful hostess of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Living in Bethany near Jerusalem, she welcomed Christ into her home and served Him with generous devotion, though He gently reminded her that contemplation of God, exemplified by her sister Mary, is "the better part" when she became overly anxious with many tasks. Martha's faith shone most brilliantly after the death of Lazarus, when she confidently professed her belief in Christ, declaring, "Yea, Lord, I have believed that Thou art Christ the Son of the living God," immediately before Jesus raised her brother from the dead. Tradition also holds that after the Resurrection and the persecution of the early Church, Martha, Mary, and Lazarus evangelized in Provence, where Martha became renowned for her charity and holiness. Born in Sablé-sur-Sarthe, he entered the priesthood in 1827 and, inspired by a vision to restore monastic life, reestablished the Benedictine community at Solesmes in 1833, becoming its first abbot.
