Born into poverty and caste discrimination in rural Uttar Pradesh, Phoolan Devi survived child marriage, abuse, imprisonment, and life among armed bandits before becoming one of India’s most controversial public figures. Known as the Bandit Queen, she was accused in connection with the 1981 Behmai massacre, surrendered before thousands of spectators in 1983, spent more than a decade in prison without completing a trial, and later won election to India’s Parliament.

In this episode of You Can’t Unhear, we examine Phoolan Devi’s journey from the villages of northern India to the Chambal ravines, the disputed accounts surrounding Behmai, her carefully negotiated surrender, her transformation into a political symbol, and her assassination in New Delhi in 2001.
