In today's episode, you are going to learn more about some Slovak correlative conjunctions. You will also learn how to say “Like father, like son" in Slovak.

Slovak lesson

Common correlative pairs in Slovak include:

1.    buď… alebo (either… or)

     Buď pôjdeš, alebo zostaneš. (Either you go or you stay.)

2.    nielen… ale aj (not only… but also)

      Nielen že je múdry, ale je aj dobrý. (He is not only smart but also nice.)

3.    alebo … alebo (whether/either … or)

      Alebo to urobíš ty, alebo ja. (Either you do it, or I do it.)

4.    ani … ani (neither … nor)

     Nemá rád ani futbal, ani hokej. (He likes neither football nor hockey.) He     doesn't like neither football nor hockey.

     Nemám ani čas, ani peniaze. (I have neither time nor money.)

Note: Slovak requires a negative verb (nemám) when using ani... ani.

5.    aj … aj (both … and)

     Prišli aj mladí, aj starí. (Both young and old came.)

6.    či, či už… alebo (whether… or)

    Či už prší, alebo svieti slnko, vždy chodí pešo.

7.    radšej … než (rather … than)

     Radšej budem čítať knihu, než pozerať televíziu. (I would rather read a book than watch television.)

8.    taký … ako (as … as)

     Tvoj brat je taký vysoký ako ty. (Your brother is as tall as you.)

9.    taký … že (such … that)

     To bol taký nudný film, že som zaspala. (It was such a boring movie that I fell asleep.)

10. aký … taký (what … that / what kind … that kind)

    Aký otec, taký syn. (What kind of father, that kind of son. = Like father, like son.)
