When Donald Wollheim called J.R.R. Tolkien in 1964 to ask permission to publish a paperback edition of The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien told him he would never allow his great work to appear in so degenerate a form as a paperback. Wollheim, offended and stubborn, went looking for a legal loophole instead. He found one.

On July 29, 1954, George Allen and Unwin had published The Fellowship of the Ring in London, England, printing only 3,500 copies to limit financial risk. All sold within six weeks. For the next decade the book remained available only in hardcover, out of reach for most American readers. In 1965 Ace Books published all three volumes without Tolkien's authorization at 75 cents each, sold over 100,000 copies, and accidentally handed the book to a counterculture audience that turned it into a global institution.

Tolkien died in 1973, wealthy in his final years specifically because the format he had called degenerate made his work accessible to the audience his authorized publishers had spent a decade failing to reach.
