The third plague is easy to overlook. Sandwiched between the frogs and the swarms of flies, it receives only a handful of verses in Exodus. Yet this brief account marks one of the most significant turning points in the entire plague narrative. For the first time, Pharaoh's magicians are unable to imitate God's work, forcing them to make an astonishing confession: "This is the finger of God." What began as a contest of signs now becomes an undeniable revelation of the Creator Himself.

In this episode, we explore why God chooses the dust of the earth as the instrument of judgment, what the plague reveals about creation itself, and why Egypt's magicians suddenly reach the limits of their power. We examine the biblical significance of dust from Genesis onward, discuss the different possibilities for the identity of the insects, and consider why this plague represents something fundamentally different from the first two. Rather than merely manipulating creation, God demonstrates that He alone possesses the authority to create life from the dust.

We also trace one of Scripture's most remarkable themes by following the phrase "the finger of God" throughout the Bible. From the Exodus, to the giving of the Law, to Jesus casting out demons, we examine how this overlooked expression ties together the work of the Holy Spirit, spiritual warfare, and God's ongoing victory over the powers that seek to deceive the nations. Along the way, we discuss the curse upon the serpent, the authority of Christ over demons, and why this seemingly small plague carries enormous theological significance.

As with our Genesis series, our goal is not simply to repeat familiar interpretations, but to wrestle honestly with the text, the ancient worldview behind it, and the questions that emerge when we slow down and read Scripture on its own terms. The third plague is far more than an account of tiny insects. It is God's declaration that the One who formed humanity from the dust still alone possesses the power to create, to judge, and to call His creation back to Himself.
