The final Mishna in Taanis states: “There were no days as joyous for the Jewish people as the fifteenth of Av and as Yom Kippur, as on them…the daughters of Jerusalem would go out and dance in the vineyards. And what would they say? Young man, please lift up your eyes and see what you choose for yourself. Do not set your eyes on beauty; set your eyes on family. ‘Grace is deceitful and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears Hashem, she shall be praised’….” On this Mishna the Gemara Bavli (Ein Yaakov) states: “The Sages taught: There were four groups in the Land of Israel. The beautiful among them would say, ‘Set your eyes on beauty, for a wife is only for beauty.’ Those of distinguished lineage among them would say, ‘Set your eyes on family’…The wealthy among them would say, ‘Set your eyes on those who possess wealth’…The ugly among them would say, ‘Take your acquisition for the sake of Heaven.’” (The Gemara Yerushalmi mentions only two groups: the beautiful (which includes the beautiful, those of distinguished lineage, and the wealthy), and the ugly.) Regarding “the wealthy”: A young woman at the age of shidduchim had no wealth of her own. Since “All the honor of the king’s daughter is within,” Jewish girls did not go out to earn money before marriage; rather they were “wealthy” because their family was wealthy. The general introduction given by all of the groups was: “Young man, please lift up your eyes and see,” meaning, look upward and focus not on what is superficial but on what is fundamental, and then you will merit the match suited for you.
