Omega Centauri black hole found
Our top story is a major breakthrough in Omega Centauri, the Milky Way’s largest globular cluster. By combining more than twenty years of Hubble observations with newer data from the James Webb Space Telescope, astronomers have confirmed the first stellar-mass black hole ever found in the cluster. They inferred it from the motion of a companion star orbiting an unseen object about four and a half times the Sun’s mass, and the orbit takes roughly ninety-four years, making this the longest-period black hole binary known. It’s an important result because Omega Centauri has long been expected to contain many black holes, but direct evidence had been missing until now.
