More than 220,000 people have been evacuated in southwestern France after an additional 55,000 residents from six towns south of Bordeaux were forced to flee overnight due to erratic "fire whirlwinds". The extreme weather conditions have fueled what officials call one of France’s largest forest fires since World War Two, burning over 42,000 hectares in the Gironde region.
