Norma Caraker, a beloved waitress and widow of a former mayor in Troy, Illinois, was found strangled in her bed with a bungee cord around her neck. Her son, Neil Howard — who initially claimed a mystery man fled the scene — was arrested and later convicted after police found no signs of forced entry and DNA evidence from Norma’s date raised doubts but didn’t sway the jury.
