Fighting the Demons – The Holy Rule of St. Benedict with Fr. Mauritius Wilde O.S.B
In this episode of The Holy Rule of St. Benedict: A Spiritual Path for Today’s World, Fr. Mauritius Wilde, OSB and Kris McGregor explore the spiritual battle described in the opening chapter of the Rule and the Benedictine understanding of fighting the demons. Drawing on the wisdom of the Desert Fathers, Fr. Mauritius explains that these “demons” are often the destructive thoughts, temptations, and inner movements that draw us away from Christ. Rather than becoming preoccupied with evil itself, St. Benedict calls us to keep our eyes fixed on Christ, recognizing that the Christian life is ultimately a battle for holiness and freedom. Following the example of Jesus in the desert, believers learn to identify harmful thoughts and overcome them through the power of the Holy Spirit and Sacred Scripture.
Fr. Mauritius highlights the practical wisdom of the early monks, especially Evagrius Ponticus, who identified recurring patterns of temptation and taught the importance of recognizing them before they take root. By naming these inner struggles and responding with God’s Word, Christians learn to replace fear, anger, sadness, pride, and other destructive thoughts with the truth of the Gospel. Through prayer, meditation on Scripture, and the steady rhythms of spiritual life, the Holy Spirit gradually transforms the heart, bringing peace where there was turmoil and freedom where there was once spiritual bondage.

CHAPTER I
The second kind is that of Anchorites, or Hermits, that is, of those who, no longer in the first fervor of their conversion, but taught by long monastic practice and the help of many brethren, have already learned to fight against the devil; and going forth from the rank of their brethren well trained for single combat in the desert, they are able, with the help of God, to cope single-handed without the help of others, against the vices of the flesh and evil thoughts.
