Saint Bridget of Sweden is one of the few saints who managed to influence kings, popes, and ordinary families alike. She was a wife, a mother of eight children, a widow, a mystic, a pilgrim, and eventually the foundress of a religious order. Her life reminds us that holiness doesn't always follow a straight line. Sometimes God prepares a saint through many different vocations before revealing the mission He has planned.

She was born in 1303 into one of Sweden's most influential noble families. From childhood, Bridget had a deep love for prayer, and according to tradition, she experienced visions of Christ from an early age. Still, she didn't spend her youth in a convent. Like many women of her time, she married.

And by all accounts, it was a very happy marriage.

Bridget and her husband, Ulf, raised eight children together, including their daughter, Catherine of Sweden. They governed their household with generosity, welcomed the poor, and even made a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela together. Their marriage has often been held up as one of the Church's great examples of a holy Christian family.

After Ulf's death, everything changed.

Bridget devoted herself entirely to God and began receiving the series of visions for which she is best known. These revelations centered on the life and Passion of Christ and called the Church to repentance and renewal.
