Episode Details

Dabo Swinney believes Clemson football is faster than it was last season at every position.

Is that evidence of a legitimate transformation under new strength and conditioning coach D. Love, or is it another offseason claim that will disappear once the pads come on?

Morgan Thomas examines the difference between testing speed and football speed. Faster forty times and improved conditioning only matter if Clemson’s players recognize plays, communicate assignments, take proper angles and maintain their explosiveness late in games.

The discussion explores where Clemson’s speed improvement should become noticeable first, including special teams, linebacker pursuit, secondary recovery and an inexperienced defensive tackle rotation featuring Amare Adams, Vic Burley and Markus Strong. Chris Johnson Jr. represents the offensive side of the transformation after Dabo described the explosive transfer as “touchdown fast.”

The LSU opener will provide an immediate test. Can Will Heldt create pressure against talented offensive tackle Jordan Seaton? Can Sammy Brown contain mobile quarterback Sam Leavitt? Will Clemson’s defensive tackles prevent Harlem Berry from reaching the second level? And can Clemson’s rebuilt secondary handle playmakers such as Eugene Wilson III and 6-foot-7 tight end Trey’Dez Green?

Clemson may be faster during offseason testing. LSU will reveal whether the Tigers can play faster, think faster and finish stronger.
