बलभद्रनामा कश्चन वणिक्पुत्रः आसीत् । तस्य सम्पदं दृष्ट्वा अनेके जनाः तस्य सुहृदः अभवन् । तस्य आपणे सर्वदा सम्यक् खादन्तः जल्पन्तः मद्यं पिबन्तः च कालं यापयन्ति स्म । अथ कदाचित् दूरस्थात् ग्रामात् बलभद्रं द्रष्टुम् आगतः मातुलः सम्पत्तेः दुरुपयोगं दृष्ट्वा सुहृदां विषये पूर्वसूचनां ददाति यत् एते वास्तविकाः सुहृदः न इति । तेषां सुहृदां लघुपरीक्षां करोति । तया  बलभद्रेण ज्ञायते कः वास्तविकः सुहृद् इति  ।

Balabhadra was the son of a merchant. Seeing his wealth, many people became his friends. They spent time in his shop eating, chatting, and drinking. One day, Balabhadra’s uncle came from a distant village. Observing the misuse of wealth, he warned Balabhadra that these were not true friends. To test them, Balabhadra arranged a small trial, through which he discovered who his real friends were.
