💡 Unlocking the Playbook
Service vs. Hospitality: Service is the transactional delivery of a product—getting the food to the customer correctly. Hospitality, however, is how you make that person feel during the experience. People can get a similar service or product anywhere, but they will return to the place that makes them feel seen and cared for. Leaning into the feeling, the ambiance, and the personal connection is what sets a brand apart and builds a loyal following.
Challenge the Status Quo: Don't accept "that's how it's always been done" as a valid reason. Andrew draws inspiration from Danny Meyer's book Setting the Table, constantly asking, "Whoever wrote the rule that...?" This question gives you the permission to innovate and break from industry norms. If people look at you sideways or think your idea is crazy, it’s often a strong signal that you're on the right track and creating something truly different.
Survive by Staying Steady: The entrepreneurial journey is a roller coaster, and you can't afford to live and die on every high and low. Instead of focusing on the final outcome, fall in love with the process and the daily pursuit of getting 1% better. Celebrate the small wins, learn from the losses without letting them define you, and understand that the game is a series of micro-battles, not a single event. This "steady Eddie" mindset is essential for long-term survival and sanity.
🤫 PART TWO's Playbook Secret (The official No Trade Secret drops in PART THREE, but here is the hidden secret of PART TWO!)
Reframe stress and anxiety as a gift. If you feel anxious or stressed about something, it’s a powerful signal that you’re alive and deeply care about what you’re doing. It means you are challenging yourself to do something meaningful. If you go through life with zero stress, you aren't pushing your boundaries, growing as a person, or doing anything worthwhile.
🗣️ Words to Build On
"Service is the actual action items. Hospitality is how they make you feel." – Andrew Martino
"You can't get too low or too high. You didn't win. You didn't lose. The game's not over. There's just like all these micro battles and like you can't live and die on every single one." – Andrew Martino
"If you're ever going through life all the time and you have zero stress and zero anxiety about anything, you are not challenging yourself. You're not making yourself into a better person." – Andrew Martino
