בכל ענין בתורה יש את פירושו הפשוט ופירוש עמוק יותר. ולדוגמא בב' הדברות הראשונות של עשה"ד [כמ"ש בשישי דפ' יתרו, וברביעי דפ' ואתחנן]: "אנכי ה' אלקיך וגו'"‏ – ‏לא רק להאמין במציאות ה' ושהוציא בנ"י ממצרים וכו' כפירוש הפשוט, אלא גם בפירוש עמוק יותר: להאמין ש"אנכי ה' אלקיך"‏ – ‏כחך וחיותך‏ – ‏ה' הוא הנותן לאדם את הכחות, השכל והרגש וכל האפשרויות, להצליח בעניניו ע"י יגיעה וכו'. "לא יהי' לך אלקים אחרים וגו'"‏ – ‏לא רק לא לעשות "אלקי כסף ואלקי זהב" כפירוש הפשוט, אלא גם בפירוש עמוק יותר‏ – ‏לא לעשות "עבודה זרה" מכסף זהב וכבוד, ואפי' לא מכחותיו, כי הכל אינו אלא כ"גרזן ביד החוצב"!

Everything in Torah has a simple meaning and a deeper meaning. For example, the first two of the Aseres Hadibros (in revi’i of parashas Va’eschanan): (1) “I am Hashem your G-d…” doesn’t only mean that one must believe in the existence of Hashem and that He took the Jewish people out of Egypt, etc. but also that one must believe that “I am Hashem your G-d” – “your strength and your life-force” – meaning that, while a person is obligated to put in his own effort, it is Hashem who gives him all his faculties, intellect, emotions, and the ability to succeed. (2) “You shall have no other gods….” Doesn’t only mean that one mut not make “gods of silver and gods of gold” etc. in the physical sense, but also that one must not to make an “idol” out of money, gold, or honor, and not even out of one’s own abilities – because all of these are nothing more than “an axe in the hand of the woodcutter.”
