Why Do I Feel So Far From God?

Nine of the Ten Commandments leave evidence. One of them doesn't.

That one is last for a reason, and it's why Israel backed away from

the mountain instead of running toward it. They had just heard a law

that reached somewhere their hands couldn't follow, and they understood

what that meant about them.

So they asked for someone to stand in between.

Most of us read these ten as a scorecard. Keep enough of them, stay on

the right side of the line, hope the math works out. The text refuses

that reading before it even starts. Before God says a single "you shall,"

He says what He has already done. Rescue first. It's always rescue first.

We're in Exodus 20 today, in the Hebrew, in the covenant world these

words were actually spoken into. And we're following the question Israel

asked at that mountain all the way to the answer God sent.
