On a pale March afternoon, Laura Vale comes to a sharp-eyed village sleuth with a frightened confession. Her husband Henry is jealous, suspicious and cruel. He has discovered the foolish letters she exchanged with Gerald Fenwick, a handsome young mechanic, and now he watches her, opens her post and smiles as he warns that women who make fools of men sometimes come to bad ends. The next night Henry Vale is stabbed in the lane beyond Larkspur Cottage. Laura says she saw two men struggling from her upstairs window. Gerald is found walking towards the neighbouring town with blood on his cuff and Laura's letters in his pocket. He had threatened Henry the evening before. The village has its murderer before breakfast. But moonlight is theatrical, windows are public stages, and letters preserved in a locked drawer can tell precisely the story somebody wants the police to believe. Between an estranged cousin, a missing knife, a torn button, a pawn ticket and another woman seen in the lane wearing white fur, the village sleuth begins to suspect that too many frightened people arrived at the same place that night — each hiding a different piece of the truth. The Woman at the Window is an original Golden Age-style village mystery about jealousy, romantic fantasy and the dangerous moment when words written carelessly are treated as proof of murder.
