The Gilead Gazette: Embryos Are ‘Children’ Now, Monument to Fetuses, Bans Cost $140B
Description
This week on the Gilead Gazette: while the country watched Trump’s war with Iran, the war on women had one of its busiest weeks yet.
The administration quietly rewrote a federal grant program, the Embryo Adoption Awareness program at Health and Human Services, to describe frozen embryos as “children who already exist.” It looks like paperwork. It’s fetal personhood, the legal groundwork to ban IVF and ab@rt!on nationwide without a single vote. We already saw it in Alabama, where calling embryos “children” shut IVF clinics down overnight.
A new report from the Institute for Women’s Policy Research finds ab@rt!on bans are draining roughly $140 billion a year from the economy, pushing women out of jobs and whole states out of the running for the workers who’d power them.
In San Antonio, artist Ana Hernandez unveiled a mural honoring four women killed by Texas’s ban: Josseli Barnica, Nevaeh Crain, Porsha Ngumezi, and Tierra Walker. Meanwhile Arkansas approved a monument to the unborn at its Capitol, built from a design taken from a local artist who was never paid. In Wyoming, after a judge struck down three anti-ab@rt!on laws, Republicans moved to dismantle their own supreme court. And in the lightning round: Kentucky activists campaigning to end IVF, Ohio trying to put the ab@rt!on pill on an opioid-style watch list, and a fake clinic opening across the street from a real one in Danville, Illinois.
This Tuesday marks four years since Dobbs. Stay angry. Stay loud. Under Her Eye.
