Charles Spicer relates how Ribbentrop arrived at Victoria Station as the new German ambassador with a mission to neutralize Britain through a show of friendship. However, his tenure was a disaster; he was socially clumsy, notoriously giving a Hitler salute to the King. His wife, Annelies, was equally thin-skinned and offended by the British habit of teasing. Simultaneously, Nevile Henderson became the British ambassador to Berlin. Henderson, an arch-appeaser who admired the regime's efficiency, was paranoid about upsetting Hitler, further complicating the efforts of amateur spies to communicate the true nature of the Nazi threat to Whitehall.
