The Padres had a chance to bounce back after Friday night’s heartbreaking extra-inning loss, but instead the offense disappeared as San Diego fell 6-1 to the Kansas City Royals on Saturday afternoon.

Fernando Tatis Jr. provided the lone bright spot with a third-inning solo home run, but the Padres managed just one run despite putting runners on base throughout the afternoon. San Diego finished just 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position, stranded seven runners and grounded into two costly double plays that killed their best scoring opportunities.

Griffin Canning’s recent stretch of better outings came to an end after surrendering four earned runs in just 3.2 innings, including Lane Thomas’ two-run homer in the first inning. Matt Waldron gave the Padres valuable length out of the bullpen, but Salvador Perez’s sixth-inning two-run blast put the game out of reach.

Ty France collected two doubles, Jake Cronenworth added two hits, and Tatis accounted for the Padres’ only run, but the heart of the lineup couldn’t capitalize as Manny Machado, Xander Bogaerts, Jackson Merrill and Gavin Sheets combined to go hitless.

Kansas City has now taken the first two games of the series, while the Padres fall to 48-50, dropping two games below .500 and missing another opportunity to gain ground in the National League Wild Card race.
