Saint Colman of Stockerau is one of those saints whose entire public life lasted only a few days, yet whose witness has endured for more than a thousand years.

Very little is known with certainty about his early life. Tradition tells us that Colman was an Irish pilgrim who left his homeland around the end of the tenth century. Like so many Irish monks and pilgrims before him, he set out simply to visit the holy places of Europe and, if God willed, continue on to Jerusalem. It was an age when pilgrimage meant real sacrifice. There were no maps, no inns at every stop, and no guarantee that a traveler would ever return home.

Somewhere along that journey, everything changed.

While passing through what is now Austria, near the town of Stockerau, Colman found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. The region was on edge because of raids and military conflicts along the frontier. A stranger speaking a foreign language immediately aroused suspicion.

The local people concluded that he must be a spy.

No amount of explanation seemed to help.

Colman was arrested, tortured, and eventually hanged from an elder tree around the year 1012. He died not because he had committ
