The most famous racehorse in England has vanished, and his trainer lies dead on the moor: days before the Wessex Cup, Silver Blaze, the favourite, disappears from his stable at King's Pyland on Dartmoor, and in the morning his trainer, John Straker, is found a quarter of a mile away with his head shattered and a strange little knife in his hand; a young stranger had come to the stables the night before, the stable-boy was drugged with powdered opium in his supper, and a whole county's fortune rides on a horse that is nowhere to be found. Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson take the train to Dartmoor, and Holmes fixes at once upon the detail everyone else has overlooked — the curious incident of the dog in the night-time; the dog did nothing in the night-time, and that, says Holmes, was the curious incident.
