The Night the Bait Shop Clerk Found the Map at Lake Dardanelle
Description
September 1993. The bait shop on Lake Dardanelle stays open late for fishermen who know the catfish run after midnight. Luna's cousin Ray worked the counter that summer—selling minnows, wiping down the glass case, listening to the AM radio crackle between stations. But one night a man came in who didn't want bait. He wanted a fishing spot that wasn't on any map. He pointed to a cove that Ray had never heard of, and when Ray said he didn't know it, the man just smiled. He left a folded paper on the counter. The paper showed a hand-drawn map of the lake—but the lake was wrong. There was an island in the middle that shouldn't have been there. Ray kept the map. He never went looking for the island. But he started locking the shop door at dusk, and he stopped going out on the water alone. This is the story of what he saw the night he almost unfolded it again.
