An experience or piece of information that makes you see a situation more realistically.

Example:

Imagine someone starts their first job after university.

They expect to immediately get exciting projects, earn a high salary, and move up quickly.

But their first few months involve routine tasks, long days, and a lot of learning.

They might say:

"My first few months at work were a real reality check."
