Taylor Schabusiness: Insanity, Substance Psychosis, or Something Darker?

Season 3 Episode 26 Published 3 months, 1 week ago
Description

In the early morning hours of February 22, 2022, a mother in Green Bay, Wisconsin, walked into her basement looking for her son. What she found would become the center of one of the most disturbing criminal cases in the state’s history.

Twenty-four-year-old Taylor Schabusiness was arrested within hours and confessed to killing 25-year-old Shad Thyrion, someone she had known since high school. The facts of the crime were never seriously disputed. The real question became whether Taylor was legally responsible for what she had done.

In this episode of GBRLIFE Transmissions: Of Crimes, Kaitlyn examines Taylor’s childhood trauma, early psychiatric treatment, decision to stop taking medication, methamphetamine use, courtroom attack, insanity defense, and the psychological questions that continue to surround the case.

Was Taylor experiencing substance-induced psychosis? Did she have an underlying mental illness that existed before the drugs? Did her disturbing behavior point toward psychopathic traits? Or can all of those explanations exist at the same time?

This episode explores the difficult line between understanding how someone’s mind deteriorated and holding them accountable for the harm they caused.

Content notice: This episode discusses homicide, dismemberment, substance abuse, childhood trauma, psychiatric illness, sexual violence, and disturbing crime-scene details.
