Erin Lewis Checked That Camera Weekly. She Lay Behind the Woodshed.
Published 2 months, 3 weeks ago
Description
Every Sunday, Erin Lewis walked out to a cedar post at the corner of her pasture and checked the battery on the trail camera she had put up to keep deer off her goats. She never sat down to look at what the card was collecting. When detectives pulled it, the forty-one motion events were mostly deer, an opossum and the mailman. Three of them were the same man, three weeks running, the last one standing twelve feet from the lens carrying something long wrapped in orange nylon.
---
Erin Lewis, thirty-two, a float nurse at the regional hospital in Harlan County, Kentucky, was found on the ground behind the woodshed at her home on Sycamore Creek Road on the morning of Tuesday, March sixteenth, two thousand twenty-one. The medical examiner's finding was a fatal injury to the back of her head caused by a heavy blunt object. Ralph Stewart, forty-four, of Baxter, had done winterization work on the barn the previous November and denied ever returning to the property. A search of his truck recovered a long gun case of orange nylon folded beneath the spare wheel; a hair in one of its seams produced a DNA profile matching Erin's. He was arrested on April fourth, later admitted striking her with a maul, and directed investigators to a second maul discarded in a creek off Route one nineteen. He entered a guilty plea to murder and was sentenced to thirty-eight years by Judge Vera Ingram in Harlan County Circuit Court. His account that he had only gone there to talk was not supported by any message between them. A separate death, that of Melissa Crowe, was reviewed because of his work in the same county; no charges followed and that case remains unresolved.
---
This episode is fiction. Erin Lewis, Ralph Stewart and the Harlan County investigation are invented for this series. No real case, person or agency is described, and the account follows the original script exactly as written.
