In Direct Israel-Iran Clashes, an IDF soldier convicted of spying for Iranian forces throughout 2025 was sentenced to five years in prison by a military court, the IDF announced on Wednesday. The soldier was accused of passing information to Iranian agents in exchange for financial compensation, including videos of interceptions of Iranian missiles during the war. The IDF says the soldier received several Telegram messages offering money in exchange for videos and photographs of sensitive security information. Among the videos the soldier is accused of sending were two of rockets being intercepted, filmed during Operation Rising Lion, as well as several he found online showing missiles hitting Israel. The soldier eventually confessed that he had been in contact with a foreign agent and was arrested by security forces. During the trial, the military court noted that the soldier had not shared IDF information or any footage he had obtained in his military role. In addition to the five-year prison term, he received a 1,000 shekel fine and was demoted to the rank of Private.

In Regional Impacts, US President Donald Trump is reported to be pressuring Israel to withdraw forces from areas along the border with Syria, with Axios noting that Netanyahu was urged to redeploy out of Syria and Lebanon. The discussion prompts questions about where Israel might shift forces and which areas may come under scrutiny, as analysts note the historical context of the Golan Heights and the buffer lines created after 1967 and the 1974 ceasefire. The Israel-Syria border is described as comprising two lines separated by a UN-monitored buffer zone, with references to Alpha and Bravo lines and the geography of the frontier. Separately, Syria’s President Ahmad al-Sharaa told Trump that Israel refused to include the word “withdrawal” in any agreement and halted negotiations when the issue was raised; Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan echoed Sharaa’s stance, saying Israel must withdraw from Lebanon and Syria before any agreement, and noting that the withdrawal should be completed before the end of the year.

In US Policy Concerning Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to travel to Washington, DC, on Saturday night and stay through Tuesday to attend the memorial service for Senator Lindsey Graham, with a possible meeting with President Trump on the itinerary. Israeli sources said the trip would mark Netanyahu’s first official visit to Washington since the war with Iran, the last such visit having taken place in February. The leaders had recently spoke by phone to congratulate Trump on the US independence anniversary, and they agreed to meet soon.

In Israeli Domestic Politics, the High Court of Justice canceled Yehuda Eliyahu’s appointment as head of the Israel Land Authority, setting aside the government’s decision and the search committee’s recommendation. The court’s framework cited the undisputed high degree of connection between Eliyahu and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, noting that a candidate with such a linkage must show a substantial relevant advantage to overcome the affiliation. The petitions focused on the connection rather than general qualifications for the post. In a separate matter, the Supreme Court overturned a Tel Aviv District Court decision that would have allowed Chaim Rotter, a Bnei Brak resident accused of rape and indecent acts against minors, to go on house arrest with electronic monitoring in Safed; Rotter remains in custody as the case proceeds. Also today, protests against the recruitment of Haredim outside the recruitment office in Tel Hashomer blocked the cordon outside the office, as demonstrat
