Description

A Canadian sailboat, the 40-foot trimaran Mizuya, lost its rudder 950 miles southwest of Adak in rough North Pacific weather—winds up to 35 mph and 15-foot waves. With no other vessels able to reach them, the Canadian Coast Guard ship Sir Wilfrid Laurier sailed 575 miles to rescue the three crew members (two men, one woman), all in good health. They were transferred to a Japan Coast Guard vessel on June 21 and flown to Japan. The abandoned Mizuya, now adrift in international waters, is marked with “SAFE” painted in red and its solar tracker left active—no immediate navigation hazard, per U.S. Coast Guard.
