Overdose Response Guide for Everyone
Description
With Ottawa’s safe consumption sites closing, public drug use is rising—and experts are sounding the alarm. Learn the critical signs of overdose: slowed or stopped breathing, unresponsiveness, blue lips or nails. Overdose can cause brain damage in minutes without oxygen. If you suspect someone overdosing, prioritize your safety first, then shout and shake them. If no response, call 9-1-1 immediately. Administer naloxone (free at pharmacies and health centers), then start CPR if trained. If no improvement after 2–3 minutes, give another dose of naloxone. Once breathing resumes, place them in recovery position. Even if you don’t use drugs, carrying naloxone could save a life. If you don’t have naloxone, stay with the person and relay symptoms to responders. Resources like the National Overdose Response Service offer confidential support. Stay prepared—knowledge can be lifesaving.
