Banks Peninsula Fishing Reserves Expand | Christchurch News
Description
Wairewa Rūnanga is fighting to protect Banks Peninsula’s marine life by expanding fishing reserves, proposing to grow Te Kaio and create a new Māhērua reserve to shield fish stocks from rising commercial pressure. While these areas will largely ban commercial fishing, they’ll allow anchoring and processing of fish caught elsewhere — and Māhērua will also permit crayfish and pāua harvesting. Community confusion over impacts on recreational fishing is being addressed through public notices and upcoming consultations, as 76 submissions have already been received — with the public feedback window closing soon.
