"He who will come." — a meaningless family curiosity, or so everyone believes; then Reginald Musgrave, an old college acquaintance, brings a young Sherlock Holmes a double mystery from Hurlstone, one of the oldest manor houses in Sussex: his butler Brunton, brilliant, restless and far too clever for his station, was caught at midnight poring over the family's Ritual and has since vanished without a trace, and days afterwards the maid he jilted disappears too, while a bag of dull, discoloured metal is dragged from the lake; to find the answer Holmes must pace out the shadow of an elm that no longer stands and lift a flagstone in a forgotten cellar. This is one of the very few cases Holmes tells in his own voice, drawn from the tin box of his earliest work, before Watson ever knew him — presented complete and unabridged, exactly as Arthur Conan Doyle wrote it, from the Midnight Archive, Nocturnal Tales' library of the classic detective stories that built the genre.
