The Cassette on the Desk
Description
Luna arrives in a small editing booth on a damp October evening, hired to digitize a collection of old audio cassettes from a defunct community radio station. The room smells of mildew and burnt dust. She finds one tape labeled 'Brookhaven — Sept 23—' with no year. The recording begins with a woman's voice, calm at first, then breaking into a whisper: 'I don't think they know I'm still here.' Luna plays it twice. She cannot place the accent, or the sound beneath the voice—a rhythmic scraping, like fingernails on bark. This is the moment she realizes the tapes were not meant to be heard. The episode ends as she rewinds to listen again, and the tape makes a sound that is not mechanical.
