The Crying Behind the Wall and the Mother Who Listened
Description
Luna presses her ear to the nursery wall, where a child's cry echoes from within. She finds a loose board and behind it, a hidden passage leading to a room that smells of cedar and dust. Inside, a rocking chair, a pile of children's shoes, and a tape labeled 'Celia's Lullaby — Second Verse.' When she plays it, she hears not Celia but Alice's voice, singing to a child that was never recorded. The breathing shifts throughout, becoming softer, almost maternal. Luna follows the sound of crying deeper into the house, where she finds a door with a red handle—not the red door, but a child-sized door built into the wall. The handle turns on its own, and a small hand reaches through the crack. Luna takes it, and the crying stops. The breathing holds its breath, and a woman's voice—not Celia, not Alice, not Luna—whispers 'thank you' from inside the wall.
