The Woman Who Saw the Wake at Kettle Hole
Description
January stretches on past endurance in the town of Kettle Hole, a rutted road and a boarded-up diner at the edge of a frozen bog. The cold sits so deep the ground cracks. Luna's friend Ellie, a wildlife photographer, goes out one night to shoot the ice — and captures something in her long-exposure frames that shouldn't have been there. A wake on the bog, in the dead of winter, moving against the wind. Not an animal. Not a person. A shape that only appears in the camera's slow burn, and that seems to know it's being watched. The next morning Ellie's memory of the night is already thinning, but the photographs are intact — and what they show isn't anything she remembers looking at. A quiet, lingering story about the gap between the eye and the lens, and what moves in that gap.
