Dr. Shane Gero is a renowned Canadian marine biologist, National Geographic Explorer, and a leading expert on sperm whale culture. For nearly two decades, Shane has tracked over 30 families of sperm whales in the Caribbean Sea. Today, he serves as the Biology Lead for Project CETI (Cetacean Translation Initiative), an ambitious interdisciplinary project leveraging machine learning to translate whale language.


About Project CETI: Project CETI (Cetacean Translation Initiative) is a nonprofit organization and flagship National Geographic Society program, dedicated to understanding and translating the communications of sperm whales through advanced machine learning, state-of-the-art robotics, and underwater acoustics. All of CETI’s custom-developed technologies are nature-inspired and noninvasive.
