לנצחון המלחמה חיוני לומדי תורה בדיוק כמו לוחמים בפועל! וכמו בצבא עצמו: ישנו "מפקד" היושב במקום מוגן רחוק מן החזית ומתכנן את המלחמה, וישנם החיילים היוצאים לחזית ומעמידים א"ע בסכנה ולוחמים בפועל. ומובן שאם יטענו למפקד "האחיכם יבואו למלחמה ואתם תשבו פה" [כמ"ש בשישי דפ' מטות], וכתוצאה מזה יעזוב את עבודתו ויצא לחזית, הנה אדרבא - יביא היפך הנצחון! ועד"ז במובן הרחב יותר: כדי שהצבא והחיילים יצליחו במשימתם, צ"ל אלו העוסקים בתורה ומכינים את ה"תוכניות הרוחניים". גם הכלי-נשק הכי טובים לא יועילו לחייל אם הוא לא חי, וזה נעשה ע"י התורה - "הם חיינו" - שלומדים לזכותו, וזהו המזון רוחני של החייל. וכמו שחייל הבורח מחזית נק' "עריק" עד"ז אלו שעוזבים את הישיבה כדי ללחום ה"ז ללא תועלת, ואדרבא. ועד"ז הצלחת "זבולון" בעסקיו הוא בזכות לימוד התורה של "ישכר".

Torah scholars are just as essential for military victory as the soldiers on the front. We see this within the army itself, where there are soldiers on the front lines, and commanders who sit in a protected place far from the front lines and plan the war. Obviously, if the solders were to argue to a commander, “Will your brothers go to war while you sit here” (as it says in shishi of parashas Mattos), and in response the commander were to leave his planning and go out to the front, that would result in the opposite of victory. And the same applies in a broader sense: for the army and its soldiers to succeed in their mission, there must also be those engaged in Torah study and making the spiritual “plans.” Even the most advanced weapons will not help a soldier if he is not alive, and the soldier’s life depends on the Torah studied on his behalf (“for they are our life and the length of our days”); this is the soldier’s spiritual nourishment. And just as a soldier who flees from the battlefield is called a deserter, so too, one who leaves his post at the yeshivah to go and fight is not only not helping the cause, but on the contrary. Likewise, the success of Zevulun in his business affairs comes in the merit of the Torah study of Yissachar.
