The Woman Who Sat Up with the Corpse at Little Rest
Description
In the winter of 1999, on a dead-end road called Little Rest, Luna's neighbor Vera stayed awake for three nights with her husband's body. No one asked her to. The coroner was snowed in, the plows wouldn't run until morning, and the house sat at the bottom of a hill where the phone lines had been down since Tuesday. Vera didn't cry. She just sat in the rocking chair beside the bed, watching the snow pile on the windowsill, and talked to him about the things she'd never said when he could hear her. By the third night, the house began to answer back. Not from the bedroom—from the cellar stairs. This is a story about the distance between the living and the dead, and what happens when that distance starts to close.
