Luna tells the story of a November night in 2017, when a woman named Iris arrived at Spindle Cove, Maine, to inventory a dead lobsterman's gear shed. The ropes were not ropes. They were something else, something that had been growing, waiting, and counting back. Luna was there, helping a friend of a friend, and she saw the tally marks on the shed wall — thousands of them, in a hand that was not the lobsterman's. The thing in the ropes had been keeping score. And when Luna turned to leave, she saw that the number had changed while she was watching.
