ברוב הארצות ימים אלו הם ימי "חופש" לילדים מלימודים שאינם "לימודי קודש". [איני רוצה לקרוא לזה "לימודי חול", כי באמת היו צריכים להשתדל שלימודים אלו יהיו "על טהרת הקודש" (לצורך ידיעת חשבונות בתורה וכו'). כי לולא זאת, הרי החכמות חיצוניות "מלביש ומטמא בחי' חב"ד שבנפשו האלקית וכו'" (כלשון אדה"ז בתניא) – שענין הטומאה הוא דבר החמור ביותר, וזה נוגע אפי' לקטני-קטנים וכו'. ולאידך – מכיון שישנה כללות הענין דחכמות חיצוניות, מובן שאפשר לנצלם לעניני קדושה או לפרנסת בני-ביתו וכו'. ומובן, מכיון שהוא עצמו משוחד בדבר, שצריך למצוא מישהו אחר שיפסוק לו אם בשבילו לימוד זה הוא דבר המטמא את הנפש או דבר המותר לפרנסתו כו']. יש להשתדל שהתלמידים ינצלו את זמנם הפנוי ולמלא זה בלימודי קודש ועניני תומ"צ. זהו דבר הכרחי, חיוני ורציני ביותר. וכדאי להשתדל שישלחו את הילדים למנות-קיץ המתנהלים לפי רוח היהדות, שהילדים נמצאים באוירת המחנה במשך תקופה ממושכת וברציפות. ומובן גודל התועלת שבדבר.

In most countries, this is the time of the year when children are given vacation from the study of non-holy subjects. (I do not want to call them “secular studies” because the truth is that such subjects should be put to use for holy purposes, such as understanding Torah-related measurements and calculations etc. Otherwise, as the Alter Rebbe says in Tanya, studying such subjects “clothes and defiles the Chochmah, Binah, and Daas of one’s Divine soul...” something very severe, as seen from the fact that impurity affects even a newborn child etc. On the other hand, since such studies exist, it is clear that they can be utilized for holiness or for earning a livelihood etc. But since a person is biased when it comes to his livelihood, one must find someone else to rule for him whether the study is something that defiles the soul or something permissible etc.) It is a necessary, vital, and a very serious matter to ensure that this free time during the summer is filled with holy studies and with Torah and mitzvos. Moreover, it is worthwhile to endeavor that children be sent to summer camps conducted in the spirit of Yiddishkeit, where the children remain in the camp atmosphere for an extended and uninterrupted period of time, the tremendous benefit of which is self-understood.
