Great Zimbabwe's Mambo Chikanda and the Rise of the Mbira Resistance
Description
In the 1330s, Mambo Chikanda of Great Zimbabwe crushed the mbira rebellion, but the exiled musicians found refuge in the Dande region. There, under the spiritual guidance of Dzivaguru, they transformed the mbira into a symbol of resistance and spiritual identity. This episode explores how the mbira, once a court instrument, became a tool of defiance among the vaShona. We trace the journey of the exiled mbira players, their alliance with the svikiro (spirit mediums) of Dande, and how their music sustained cultural continuity when the dzimbabwe's power crumbled. Drawing from oral traditions and archaeological evidence, we uncover a little-known chapter where melody met rebellion, and how the mbira's voice outlasted the stone walls of Great Zimbabwe.
