【聊了什么The What】
In this episode, we’re joined by our old friend Nancy for an in-depth discussion of HBO’s critically acclaimed ensemble drama The Pitt. As a medical drama, the show has become, much like Succession, one of the most important texts for understanding contemporary America. From a diabetic father who chooses disability in order to obtain insurance, to ICE agents lurking outside the emergency room, we discuss how the ER becomes society’s last line of defense.
When a cyberattack shuts down the hospital’s electronic medical records system and forces the medical system back to the most primitive form of communication — pen and paper — is this a technological regression, or a return to humanity? From there, we dig into the underlying logic of the American healthcare system: Why are doctors more exhausted even as efficiency improves? Why has this season become “less entertaining”? And when a sense of meaning is worn down by the daily grind of paperwork, how can we save ourselves?
