The Feast of the Most Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ invites us to reflect on something we often hear in Scripture but may not stop to consider: the Blood of Christ is not simply a symbol. It is the price of our redemption.

From the very beginning of salvation history, blood represented life. In the Old Testament, the Israelites marked their doorposts with the blood of the Passover lamb so that death would pass over them. The sacrifices offered in the Temple pointed toward something greater still. Every drop looked ahead to the day when the true Lamb of God would offer Himself for the salvation of the world.

That day came on Calvary.

As Christ was scourged, crowned with thorns, nailed to the Cross, and finally pierced by the soldier's lance, He poured out His Precious Blood for every soul. The Church has always understood this as the complete gift of God's love. Saint Peter writes that we were redeemed "not with corruptible things, as gold or silver, but with the precious Blood of Christ, as of a lamb unspotted and undefiled."

Devotion to the Precious Blood grew steadily throughout Christian history, especially during the Middle Ages, but it received new emphasis in the nineteenth century through the preaching of Saint Gaspar del Bufalo, founder of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood. After years of political turmoil in Italy, Pope Pius IX returned to Rome in 1849 and, in thanksgiving for the restoration of peace, extended the Feast of the Precious Blood to the universal Church, assigning it to July 1.

Although the liturgical calendar was later revised after the Second Vatican Council and the separate feast was removed, devotion to the Precious Blood remains
