After more than a year of waiting, it appears the North Carolina General Assembly will vote later this week on a comprehensive budget for the new fiscal year that begins July 1.

Newline recently sat down for an extended conversation with New Hanover County State Representative Deb Butler to discuss the lack of open debate in crafting the final spending plan and the public’s right to know.

In part two of our chat, we turned our attention to some other matters of controversy in Raleigh right now – including the latest effort by Republican lawmakers to erect new roadblocks to voting, a proposal to end North Carolina’s longstanding and science-based ban on sea walls at the coast, and the spread of energy sucking data centers and their impact on the electricity bills paid by residential consumers.
