The Padres were right where they wanted to be.

Kyle Hart gave San Diego a terrific start, Gavin Sheets crushed a game-tying home run, Petco Park had life, and the game was deadlocked heading into the sixth inning.

Then everything fell apart.

A defensive error opened the door, the Dodgers never stopped hitting, and Los Angeles erupted for NINE runs in one inning to completely blow the game open. Mookie Betts delivered a three-run homer, Kyle Tucker added a two-run blast, Dalton Rushing went deep, Tommy Edman drove in three runs, and the Dodgers reminded everyone why they’re one of baseball’s most dangerous offenses.

Despite another strong game from Gavin Sheets and another multi-hit effort from Jackson Merrill, the Padres couldn’t recover from one disastrous inning.
