Dr. Douglas P. Fry is Professor Emeritus of Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Docent of Cross-Cultural Developmental Psychology at Åbo Akademi University in Vasa, Finland, and Adjunct Senior Research Scholar at the Advanced Consortium on Cooperation, Conflict, and Complexity at Columbia University. He has written extensively on aggression, conflict, and conflict resolution in his own books and in journals such as Science and American Anthropologist. His new book is Advanced Introduction to Conflict Resolution.

In this episode, we focus on Advanced Introduction to Conflict Resolution. We start by discussing what conflict resolution is, how it is studied cross-culturally, and how it varies cross-culturally. We talk about human universals, and whether they are necessarily evolved adaptations. We talk about the role of reciprocity; relationships and interconnections; justice, and respecting the rights of others; reconciliation, apology and forgiveness; and revenge. Finally, we discuss situations where conflict resolution does not work, and whether this knowledge can be applied to large-scale modern industrialized societies.
