Long before Great Zimbabwe's stone walls rose, and for centuries after, the Mwari cult in the Matopo Hills shaped political authority across the Zimbabwe Plateau. This episode explores how the svikiro (spirit mediums) at the cave shrine of Njelele communicated the will of Mwari, the high god, and how Great Zimbabwe's mambos (kings) needed their blessing to rule. We trace the oracle's influence from the 13th century through the Rozvi and Torwa periods, and examine the tension between the royal dzimbabwe and the independent shrine. Key figures include Mambo Gara, the svikiro Dzivaguru, and the mhondoro lion spirits.
