Venezuela earthquake aftershocks will continue 'for years' - Seismologist

Published 8 hours ago
Description
Seismologists say it's entirely plausible that aftershocks from Venezuela's recent twin earthquakes could continue for years, although they are expected to become less frequent and generally weaker over time. The warning follows the rare "seismic doublet" that struck northern Venezuela on June 24, 2026: two powerful earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 occurring just 39 seconds apart. Doublets are uncommon and can leave the surrounding fault system under stress, increasing the likelihood of a prolonged aftershock sequence.
